Otoplasty Can Restore Balance to Your Facial Features

Young otoplasty patientDr. Stanley L. Librach has over 15 years of experience performing otoplasty to reduce the size and profile of large or protruding ears. This procedure can address a number of cosmetic imperfections, as well as help correct the results of a previous surgery or injury. Ears that are large, irregularly shaped, disproportionate, or extend too far from your head can cause self-esteem issues in both children and adults. Dr. Librach uses the latest surgical techniques at our Chesterfield, MO, practice and provides personalized, comprehensive care for each of his patients.

What Can Otoplasty Treat?

Otoplasty can address a variety of cosmetic imperfections, including:

  • Excessively large ears, also known as macrotia
  • Protruding ears that extend too far from the head
  • Poor results from a previous surgery
  • Misshapen ears due to injury or birth defect
  • Disproportionate ears

The best candidates for otoplasty include healthy non-smokers with realistic goals and positive motivation who do not suffer from any conditions that could compromise healing. Dr. Librach can also treat healthy children over the age of five who are cooperative and able to understand the basics of the procedure.

The Otoplasty Consultation and Procedure

During your consultation, Dr. Librach will perform a thorough examination, carefully reviewing your medical history and current health to determine if you have any signs of chronic ear infections or medical conditions that could inhibit your surgery. He will also discuss your expectations and desires for otoplasty to create a treatment plan tailored to meet your unique needs. After explaining the procedure in detail and answering any questions or concerns you may have, your surgery can be scheduled.

Ears that are large, irregularly shaped, disproportionate, or extend too far from your head can cause self-esteem issues in both children and adults.

On the day of the procedure, you will be taken to a comfortable surgical room and comfortably sedated. Although each otoplasty will vary slightly, patients can expect to undergo some general steps.

Anesthesia

Dr. Librach offers local anesthesia, in addition to intravenous sedation and general anesthesia. The type of anesthesia administered will depend on the patient’s age and complexity of the procedure. Most adults can undergo this procedure with just local anesthesia. Once you are comfortable, the doctor can begin the procedure.

Incisions

The placement of your incisions will depend on the type of imperfections being corrected. For large or misshapen ears, Dr. Librach will make incisions within the natural folds of the ear to reduce and reshape the cartilage and skin. For protruding ears, incisions will be made discreetly at the back of the ear within the natural crease, allowing the doctor to position the ears closer to your head.

Sutures and Bandages

Once Dr. Librach is satisfied with the results, he will close internal incisions with durable, dissolvable sutures to keep the newly shaped ear in place. External incisions will be closed with removable sutures which are typically removed within seven to 10 days after surgery. He will carefully apply bandages to protect the surgical site and a compression garment to minimize swelling and promote a faster recovery. The overall procedure can generally be completed in one to two hours.

Recovery and Results

Around one week after the procedure, Dr. Librach will replace your original bandages with a special headband designed to maintain your results and guide the ears into proper position. This garment will need to be worn as directed for an additional three weeks or so to ensure you achieve optimal results. Full recovery generally takes about six weeks. During this time, you will need to follow post-surgical instructions, take your medications as directed, and avoid strenuous activity. As swelling and bruising subsides, you will begin to notice smaller, more proportionate ears that complement your other facial features and provide a sense of renewed self-confidence.
