Liposuction: Eliminating Stubborn Fat From Problem Areas

All of us struggle with inherited traits, and perhaps for you, that’s what’s keeping you from achieving your desired body shape. A healthy diet and regular exercise aren’t always enough to achieve the lean, beautifully contoured body you crave. For some of us, pregnancy, genetics, and the natural aging process makes it virtually impossible to lose excess fat in areas like the thighs, hips, abdomen and upper arms. If you’re battling stubborn, exercise-resistant fat pockets, liposuction may be the solution.

Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures designed to help with this problem. It slims and reshapes the body through the surgical process of removing excess fat deposits from key areas of your body.

Liposuction techniques may be used to reduce localized fat deposits in the following areas:

  • Abdomen & waist
  • Thighs
  • Hips & buttocks
  • Upper arms
  • Back
  • Chin & neck
  • Chest area
  • And more

At Stanley L. Librach, MD, DDS, we’re committed to the health and beauty of our patients both inside and out. We understand trouble spots on your body can impact your self-esteem and quality of life, so we do our best to help you reach your aesthetic goals.

The liposuction procedure can help if you have trouble reducing fat in certain areas of your body despite diet and exercise. The concept of liposuction surgery is fairly simple. Liposuction is a surgical technique that improves the body’s contour by reducing the excess fat from various spots that sit between the skin and the muscle.

Before the procedure, your surgical goals will be discussed realistically with Dr. Librach. Together you and he will decide which procedures are best for you to achieve your desired results.

For your safety and comfort, you will be placed under general anesthesia during the procedure. Dr. Librach performs that surgery by inserting a slim and hollow tube, into small incisions near the area(s) to be shaped and contoured. The tube, also known as the cannula, is then moved through the layers of tissue to remove the excess fat. Once the tissue and fat are removed, the doctor will suture the incisions closed.

Following your liposuction surgery, you will want to move around to help increase your circulation as soon as possible. Your sutures will be removed approximately 1 week post operation. Most of the bruising and swelling should subside in 3-6 weeks, but it is possible some of the swelling might last up to 6 months. You can resume light physical activities within a few days and back to full exercise at 4-6 weeks. Compression garments are required to be worn after your surgery for 4-6 weeks to help reduce the swelling, fluid retention, and to shape your new curves.

Our patients undergoing surgery often have questions about their upcoming procedure, many regarding the cost, what to expect and more. Please review the questions and answers provided by our surgical staff below. If you have further questions, contact our office today!

What are compression garments and why do I need to wear them?

Compression garments are intended for various reasons. First to reduce bruising immediately following surgery. And second to reduce swelling while your body is healing. Most surgeons require patients wear compression garments for a certain length of time after a liposuction procedure. Dr. Librach will discuss this with each patient, as everyone heals differently.

Is there pain or discomfort after liposuction surgery?

Two days immediately post liposuction procedure, the amount of pain experienced depends on the type of anesthesia used for liposuction. Soreness is usually the most intense 2-4 days after liposuction and decreases steadily. The tenderness and soreness can be bothersome for up to 4 weeks, but will gradually feel better over the following next 4 to 8 weeks. If the tenderness or soreness does not subside, contact your doctor.

What is the cost of liposuction?

The cost of a liposuction procedure is dependent on how many areas are treated. When only one area is treated by liposuction the fee is less than when multiple areas are treated.

What are realistic long term expectations of liposuction surgery?

It’s important to remember liposuction is not a weight loss solution. It will deliver the best results for patients already close to their ideal weight, but who have had trouble getting rid of fat deposits in trouble spots themselves. The results from liposuction are permanent, unless you lose or gain a significant amount of weight following surgery. To preserve the results from your surgery, exercise regularly and maintain a healthy diet.

How will my skin look after liposuction surgery? Does Liposuction produce visible scars?

Skin with good elasticity should look natural and smooth post liposuction surgery. Scars are not a common problem with modern liposuction; small incisions are required.

If diet and exercise aren’t delivering the results you’re looking for, call our office for a consultation and to learn more about liposuction.
